Summer internship

RBS’s summer internships will give you a unique insight into the world of banking. Even more importantly, they’ll give you a real understanding of the bank, our culture and our people.

From day one of the programme, you’ll have the chance to make a real contribution to RBS. We’ll ask for your ideas and you’ll take charge of your own project. So you’ll have every opportunity to show us what you can add to our business.

At the same time, you’ll be learning every day – from your manager, from your mentor, from just being in a fast-moving and supportive office environment. In your orientation week, you’ll learn the basics of the financial markets. Then you’ll get down to business, gaining a flavour of how your business area works and an understanding of how our different teams operate. At the end of it all, you should have an informed idea of where you might fit in.

Throughout the programme, you’ll develop useful skills and be given the chance to show us what you can do. Working on current business assignments, you’ll have the opportunity to build on your project management and presentation skills. And as you meet a wide range of people in work and at social events, you’ll develop as a communicator and networker. Finally, you’ll enhance your ability to work as a team player through the charity fundraising challenges we hold for our interns.

Our summer internships are for penultimate year students and we encourage applicants from a wide range of academic backgrounds to apply. Yes, you’ll need to be a fast learner with strong analytical skills and excellent attention to detail. But what we’re most interested in are your fresh ideas, enthusiasm and commitment to building a successful career in banking.

We offer summer internships in a whole range of areas. You can learn more about them below, but whichever part of the business you join, we guarantee you’ll make an important contribution. Your initiative, ideas and hard work will play a part in building a more robust RBS.

Markets

Markets is where we sell, structure and trade financial products like rates, credit, foreign exchange, equity derivatives and prime services. We also have strong non-market desks in areas such as collateral trading and counterparty exposure management. On our Markets summer internship, you’ll be exposed to our Trading, Structuring, Sales and Research & Strategy desks.

Capital Markets

Capital Markets is an expert team focused on helping RBS’s clients optimise their capital structure through raising financing in the debt capital markets or through offering a range of investment banking products. A summer internship in Capital Markets will see you experience life in our market-leading Corporate Debt Capital Markets and Financial Institutions Group teams.

International Banking

Our International Banking teams advise clients on acquisitions and disposals, raising capital, structuring balance sheets and managing risk exposures. So your rotations here could see you experience a range of areas, from Capital & Portfolio Management and Corporate Advisory to Corporate Coverage & Client Management and Transaction Services.

Corporate Banking

Corporate Banking provides commercial banking services to businesses. An internship here is a great way to see how our market-leading teams operate, and how we influence and encourage enterprise. Expect business-specific workshops, spotlight sessions with senior stakeholders, an assessed group presentation and much, much more.

Wealth

As an intern in our Wealth division, you’ll learn all about providing private banking and investment management services to high-net-worth clients. And as well as excellent technical training gained with one of two heritage brands (Adam & Company and Coutts), you’ll get the chance to attend a variety of insight sessions and networking events.

Business Services

Business Services support RBS and its global brands in a huge variety of areas – everything from maintaining our branch networks to keeping technology systems operating, protecting our customers from fraud to processing millions of payments. They’re also the brains behind innovative mobile products, new working practices and exciting improvement strategies. Which means as an intern, you’ll enjoy real variety in your projects as you work across a range of business areas.

Finance

Involved in a diverse portfolio of businesses around the globe, Finance is at the very heart of everything we do at RBS. As an intern, you’ll get a great insight into the vital role they play while enjoying a broad overview of how the bank works as a whole.

Human Resources

As part of a diverse business, RBS's HR function is an incredibly varied place to begin your career. Here, you will gain exposure to a range of business areas across the HR Division and Function. As an intern you could be involved in anything from analysing data and providing compensation recommendations to designing assessment methods and recruiting our future leaders. Alternatively, you could find yourself partnering with the business to help shape and drive the people and organisational strategies.

Group Internal Audit

Group Internal Audit provides assurance to our key stakeholders, executive management, the board and our regulators that RBS’s evolution is on track. As an intern, you’ll be involved in a range of activities throughout the audit life cycle, from supporting the development of the audit plan and completing audits to producing recommendations and reporting to the business.

Operations

Operations is responsible for the end-to-end management of all our transactions in London and in Manchester. As an intern, you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of a specific part of our business, while also getting a big-picture view of how the larger Group works.

Technology (Markets and International Banking)

Technology (MIB) keeps our Markets and International Banking technological infrastructure up and running whilst developing state-of-the-art tools for all parts of the business. As an intern, you’ll be assigned to a specific business area within Technology. This will allow you to understand that area inside out and give you a real understanding of how the global business works together.

Risk

The management of risk is absolutely vital to RBS’s stability. And now it underpins our reputation, performance and future success more than ever before. As an intern in Risk, you’ll gain experience of our business-critical functions and develop important professional skills as you do so.
